I was speaking with an analytical person a few days ago, who told me that clicks on adverts for anything to do with wellbeing drop off a cliff on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. The reason being, people do not want to think about the issues they may have at the weekend, as they want to forget and have a good time.
I cannot say I blame them.
Some red wine, some comedy and some salt & vinegar crisps are generally what get me through a Friday night. The more salt & vinegary the better.
I thought I would post something for my benefit as much as for everyone else, some simple things to think about when you are breathing which can work over the weekend, just as much as Monday to Thursday.
It is from a book called The Breathing Cure, written by Patrick McKeown, who taught me the Buteyko breathing method.
Simple thoughts to keep an eye on as you breathe.
I do appreciate, before I Iist them, too many glasses of red wine will ensure you could not give several Owl hoots as to how you breathe, so long as you keep breathing.
That, of course, is a matter for your thirst. However......!
Be cognisant of:
Are you breathing through your nose or your mouth?
Is your breathing abdominal or upper chest?
How big is the “wave" of each breath?
As soon as you breathe out, do you need to breathe back in immediately, or is there a natural pause?
Is it easy to see the movements of your breath?
The answers should be.....
Nose
Abdominal
Small wave
Natural Pause
No big movements
If it is any of the others, then enjoy your weekend doing whatever you want to do and then book an appointment consultation with your local Buteyko breathing coach on Monday. Found at buteykoclinic.com
Breathe yourself to a healthier life and not just during the week.
Cheers

It is the end of the week, and whether you are working the weekend or not, what you need is to trigger one of the greatest elements within our body. Yep, you’ve guessed it, it is our old friend the Vagus nerve. The name Vagus, stems from two places, etymologically from the Latin “to wander”, and biologically from our cerebellum, the lower part of the back of our brain, it ventures down through our heart and lungs and into our digestive system and acts as a loop of info for your heart and brain.
And why is this the greatest nerve, other nerves are of course available, because the Vagus nerve helps us to overcome stress and can be accessed by anyone at anytime. It most certainly does not have to be at the weekend.
The Vagus nerve can be triggered simply by breathing, mouth breathing we take out of this equation. Nose breathing specifically, also by laughing, by humming, by any kind of conscious breathing practice, breathing through your nose using your diaphragm and holding your breath for a few short beats, before slowly exhaling through the nose. If you find it hard to breathe without resorting to mouth breathing, then the Buteyko breathing method will help you.
This can be done on a bus, tube, plane, car, in front of the tv, walking to the bar to meet friends, prior to eating dinner.
Where is entirely up to you.
Get that stress out of your system.
This is your time to control your autonomic nervous system and let the Vagus nerve wander through your body dispensing tranquil goodness. #vagusnerve #buteykobreathingmethod #nosebreathing #simplicitycompassionbalance

This post is about mini victories. I have just finished with a client with an enormous number of physical issues such as severe asthma, a constant cough, chronic fatigue syndrome, obstructive sleep apnoea and acid reflux, which have all interlocked with each other to create a feeling of complete debilitation. I have been working with the client using the Buteyko breathing method for three weeks and today we saw for the first time some micro wins. The client’s respiratory rate, (breaths per minute) has started to reduce, the Control Pause, where you hold your breath after the exhalation until you feel an air hunger, has increased, rounds of short breath holds are becoming more common and easier to maintain, and the coup de grace, walking three times round the perimeter of their garden holding their breath for 10 steps and then regulating their breathing as soon as possible after the breath hold.
On the surface, it may not seem much, but considering how far the client is from feeling ‘normal’, these are great indicators indeed.
It is going to take a long time and many hard months, perhaps years of practice along with the guidance and support of the medical community for this client to feel as they were, however, by celebrating the small wins and giving the person back a little control helps them with their anxiety. These wins build a foundation, even if the next day isn’t so good, the foundation is there.
I could not be happier for them and shall raise a beer to them tonight.

On Sunday I did two of my favourite things, breathing and cycling. What made this different? For the first time I rode a longish distance just breathing through my nose. There were some hills when I exhaled through my mouth, but that was the only time I used it. It’s taken a few rides to be able to do this. Why on earth are you doing such a thing? I hear maybe two of you ask. Well, the breathing I do through my nose gets filtered and the oxygen gets taken deeper into my lungs where it diffuses with the CO2. By going deeper my lower lungs are not being starved so much of oxygen and the bronchioles and alveoli are getting oxygen rich haemaglobin which means my stamina begins to increase. This helps with my fitness, especially as I am taking part in a charity bike ride in under two weeks. It is the the charity are of my football club Albion in the Community (AITC), who help all sorts of disadvantaged people in Sussex. It will be 110km of many short and long and invariably steep hills, starting and finishing at the Amex stadium on July 24th. The link is in my bio, if you feel you would like to give anything to help the cause and also think about me trying to nose breathe up a really steep hill, the. I would appreciate any donation. If you are unable to at this time, thank you for the thought and concentrate on breathing through your nose with your tongue resting on the roof of your mouth.
Simple elements to help us breathe more easily:
If you are having breathing difficulties and are tempted to breathe through your mouth, try not to take this easier route.
Your nose is there for breathing and smelling and the nitric oxide we gain through breathing contains anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities which help to protect us against infection.
If your airways feel a little blocked, put a finger either side of your nose and spread your nostrils, this will open your airways a little further. It will give you extra space for the oxygen to flood into your nose and go deeper into your lungs. After a few moments this will help to unblock your airways and you can then breathe better.
